What is a proxy war?
A proxy war, or proxy warfare, is a war in which opposite sides use third parties as substitutes for fighting each other directly.
We use a variety of tactics, such as providing arms and military advisors to our “allies”, to support our proxies in conflicts around the world. In addition, we use economic aid and diplomatic pressure to try to shape the outcome of the conflicts.

Remember the 20 year conflict in Vietnam?
The north was supported by the Soviet Union, China, and other communist states, while the south was supported by the United States and other anti-communist allies. The war is widely considered to be a Cold War-era proxy war. It lasted almost 20 years, with direct U.S. involvement ending in 1973. The conflict also spilled over into neighboring states, exacerbating the Laotian Civil War and the Cambodian Civil War, which ended with all three countries becoming communist states by 1975.
Official estimate of the number of people killed during this Proxy war: as many as 2,000,000 civilians on both sides and some 1,100,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong fighters. The U.S. military has estimated that between 200,000 and 250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers died. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., lists more than 58,300 names of members of the U.S. armed forces who were killed or went missing in action.

The US proxy war in Nicaragua began when the Sandinista rebel group overthrew the Somoza regime in 1979, replacing the formerly conservative Somoza regime with the left-leaning Soviet supported Sandinistas. The revolution alarmed US officials in the Reagan administration because of the Sandinista’s anti-US sentiment. The Sandinista Ideas of past Connections to the Soviet Union and Nicaraguan Exceptionalism, explains the Sandinista’s unfavorable view of the US as a response to the immense poverty in Nicaragua. The Sandinista movement blamed Nicaraguan poverty on the “exploitative, unequal relationship with the United States, maintained throughout the former Somoza dynasty. The Sandinista government strove to sever the strong ties the nation had with the US, so the new government embarked on an economic policy that forged relations with a variety of nations, including the Soviet Union. By 1982, 20% of Nicaragua’s credit was coming from communist nations. The US viewed such developments as an open invitation for communism in Central America. In order to prevent Nicaragua from being a Soviet foothold in the Western hemisphere, US forces took action to topple the Sandinistas.
Honduras was chosen as the base of operations for U.S. operations. U.S. special forces were embedded in Honduran military training camps woorking with newly recruited farmers and Somosan guardsmen.
HOW THE PENTAGON USES A SECRETIVE PROGRAM TO WAGE PROXY WARS
Oh, and ther is a Program 127e, commonly called 127 Echo in which the United States not only arms but also trains and provides intelligence to foreign forces. However, unlike the traditional foreign assistance programmes which are aimed at building local capacity, the 127e partners are then dispatched on US-directed missions and target American enemies to achieve the country’s aims.
A detailed picture of an obscure funding authority that allows American commandos to conduct counterterrorism operations “by, with, and through” foreign and irregular partner forces around the world. Basic information about these missions — where they are conducted, their frequency and targets, and the foreign forces the U.S. relies on to carry them out — are unknown even to most members of relevant congressional committees and key State Department personnel.
November 2022 – The European Parliament has declared Russia a “state sponsor of terrorism”, saying Moscow’s “deliberate attacks and atrocities” in Ukraine violate human rights and international humanitarian laws.
Nearly 100 special forces from five Western countries — including more than a dozen Americans — have been operating on the ground in Ukraine, according to a leaked document.
The classified document, dated March 23 and marked “Secret,” revealed that the US had 14 special forces in Ukraine as of last month, reported the Guardian.
While the document included no further details about the service members’ exact location or the nature of their activities, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby attempted to spin the leak on Wednesday that a “small US military presence” was located at the embassy in Kyiv to monitor military aid sent by Washington to help Ukraine fight off the Russian invasion.
Now lets get real. We have miitary advisors on the ground in the Ukraine. You dont send Special Forces to an embassy to sit in the basement and read intel and monitor aid.
Escalation will undoubtedly begin in the very near future. As we send more of our advanced fighting equipment to the Ukraine we will need to send military trainers.
